No Meat on Tuesday
I'm going vegetarian.
Starting today.
I mean it.
I just finished my second vegetarian meal; herbed orzo with
basil, salad with nuts and some whole wheat bread. (The first vegetarian meal
was a noodley Lean Cuisine and an equally nutty salad.) I had no idea when I
woke up this morning that yesterday's Frito Pie [1] would be the last meaty meal
I'd ever eat, but then again, I didn't know I'd see this today, either.
Nightmare
Upon announcing my objections to this frightful horror in a chatroom, someone
suggested, "I wonder, though, if we might not get used to it in time? We've
adjusted to other things that once seemed gross or unthinkable."
That's the part that bothers me the most. That we'll get used
to it over time. I don't want to get used it. I've never been inclined
towards politically motivated action, much less dietary restrictions of any kind
(pass me that malted milkshake) but this really was the last straw.
And, yes. Nearly everything organic we consume has been
genetically tampered with somehow, but at least I know a tomato hasn't suffered
as a result of it. Well, I think I know, anyway.
No more meat. No more meat. No more meat.
[1] Frito Pie [that I shall never have again]
3 cups Frito Brand Corn Chips
1 large Onion, chopped
1 can (19 ounce) chili (or home made chili)
1 cup grated American cheese
Place 2 cups of Fritos Corn chips in a baking dish. Arrange
chopped onion and half of grated cheese on the corn chips. Pour chili over chips
over onion and cheese. Top with the remaining corn chips and grated cheese. Bake
at 350 degrees F. for 15 to 20 minutes.
