03.23.03 Baghdad is burning and I watched a matinee yesterday. It was very simple really. I turned off the radio, had a long talk with Hula, got in my car, forced back tears born of my frustration with the current U.S. and Iraqi administrations, drove to the theater, bought a ticket while a little red-eyed, entered darkness, and tried to forget the last 60 or so hours. Turns out it was too simple. The film I selected was very much like a Saturday morning cartoon with a lot of teenage-boy-gross-out elements tossed in for kicks. The plot was inane and the dialog marginal. The acting was a little better than the dialog considering what they had to work with though it didn't save this movie from my top 20 suck movies of all time list. But, it did allow me to disconnect completely from recent events in the world, in my place of employment and in my endeavors to go back to school. It was the best worst movie I had ever seen. Kudos to Stephen King and his obsession with the mentally challenged and the forces of evil. (I mean, we've seen the retard vs. bad guys theme in his works before, have we not? I'm not saying the idea is not interesting and doesn't warrant serious intellectual examination, but Jeez Louise, sometimes M-O-O-N spells a giant crap sandwich, okay?) When I returned home from my satisfyingly distracting crap sandwich, I heard what sounded like Moulin Rouge coming from my living room, and it sounded really good. I walked in and there it was on my TV (a 12 inch portable), but it sounded so rich, so thunderous, that I was befuddled. It took me a second or two to realize that Hula must have hooked up the tiny television to the speakers he purchased (for a song) on eBay. It took me another couple of minutes to figure out that my initial assessment was wrong and he had purchased a DVD player and set it up while I was out decompressing. And not only did he buy me Moulin Rouge, a film on my top 20 spectacular spectacular movies of all time list, he picked up some sandalwood incense--my number one favorite smell caused by lighting up (behind weed and cigarettes, both of which I don't do anymore). I don't deserve him. I also don't deserve the Anheuser-Busch corporation, but that's for another entry.
